Hi, My name is Jacob Melling.
I've been playing guitar for 24 years (As of 2023).
Teaching for 16 years.

Me In February of 2023
As a young child, I was obsessed with music.
I can still remember sitting at my old-school radio...
Waiting to press the record button on the tape cassette...
As my favorite songs would play on air.
Trying to capture the songs, so I could listen to them on repeat.
Music hit in such a powerful way... I felt it in my soul.
I knew I wanted to play an instrument...
Came When I was at a get together for my church youth group.
My Youth Pastor had a cherry red Fender Stratocaster.
That he was playing through a Marshall amp.
I was in awe watching him play.
I remember feeling so envious of his ability to play.
He made it look so effortless.
And it sounded just like the songs on the radio.
I wished I could play like that too.
A big turning point for me... was when my father and I went on a road trip together.
We decided to take a pit stop, and grab a quick bite to eat...
While parked down at the edge of the Columbia River
Listening to the radio and eating our lunch in the car.
Eruption by Van Halen came onto the radio.
My Dad made a comment along the lines of...
"Wow, could you imagine being able to play guitar like that? That would be so impressive!"
I remember when he said that... it had a huge impact on me.
It implanted the idea "If I could play Eruption...
It would impress my Dad and make him proud of me."
Which intensified my desire to play guitar...
During my 9th grade year in high school.
I was riding the bus home from school.
I noticed a kid from our sub-division (named Billy) had a guitar with him.
When we were dropped off at the same bus stop...
I started a conversation with him about playing guitar.
He told me that he had a full band setup at home...
Where him and his father played music together.
One day... he invited me over to check out their music room.
They had several guitars, amps, piano and a drum set.
Billy plugged his guitar into his amp, and his dad jumped onto the drum set.
And I watched them jam Little Wing By Jimi Hendrix...
I was blown away!
Billy asked me if I wanted to play anything...
I told him I've never played guitar before.
He handed me one of the other guitars in the room...
And offered to teach me how to play a quick song.
Within a half hour... he had taught me how to play the main riff from Brain Stew by Green Day.
I was HOOKED.
I couldn't believe I was able to play something that quick!
This lit a fire inside and made me determined to get a guitar!
After pleading with my parents to get me a guitar...
They finally bought my first guitar as a Christmas gift when I was 15.

Me & My First Guitar 1999!
I was flooded with excitement... and totally caught off guard.
They didn't even hint at it being a possibility.
It was a Squire Stratocaster...
That came in a starter pack with an amp and a VHS tape to play the basics.
After getting everything unboxed...
I sprinted to the living room and plugged in the VHS tape.
Excited to play something on my new guitar
The instructor opened by showing how to tune your guitar.
After that... nothing made sense to me.
Like a deer in headlights... I was lost from that point on.
I felt so frustrated. It moved too fast. Nothing clicked for me.
My fingers were clumsy... Every string buzzed or sounded plunky.
To say I felt discouraged... is an understatement.
And to add insult to injury...
Later that night... during our family Christmas dinner.
One of my aunt's made a comment along the lines of...
"Can you even play that thing?"
I felt so frustrated that it didn't click right away.
Was something wrong with me?
Am I not cut out to play the guitar?
I struggled to make any progress on my own.
About 2 years into my journey...
I decided to sign up for guitar lessons.
My initial results were amazing!
I progressed more in three months... than I did in the previous two years.
Then I hit a plateau.
My teacher was a nice person...
There wasn't a lot of structure to the lessons.
No clear path to follow...
I cycled through several local teachers.
But never really found a teacher that I clicked with.
Most of them seemed indifferent to teaching...
It was more of a thing they "did"... so they could play more guitar.
When I was 18 years old
I was checking out guitars in a local guitar store.
Picking up and playing guitars I liked...
Playing my "best" riffs...
"Showing off" in the store.
While switching between guitars...
A random guy in his early 40's approached me.
He walked up and said...
"Wow, you're a really good player...
...your fingers move fast
But... if you improved your rhythm...
And your musicality...
You could really become an elite player!"
At the time...
I had a really big ego about my guitar playing.
Thinking I was already a great guitar player.
Who does this guy think he is?
So... I smirked and held the guitar out to him
"Ok, show me..."
To my surprise...
This guy was an extremely advanced guitar player.
He had been playing for 30 years.
After completely stunning me with his guitar playing...
He introduced himself
Then told me that he just moved to the area.
To make a long story short...
We ended up becoming really good friends.
Started hanging out and playing guitar on a regular basis
Sometimes four or five days a week.
He basically took me under his wing...
And over the next two years
Literally transformed my guitar playing
Revealing what I needed to focus on to improve
Helping me overcome challenges and obstacles...
How to jam with other people...
And how to sound like a real musician.
We regularly played together...
Until he took a job in Wisconsin... and moved away.
As I reflect upon this experience...
This was the single biggest influence
For me becoming a guitar teacher.
Because of him...
I went from being an early intermediate player...
To being an advanced player...
In just a few short years.
Proximity and association with a true guide...
Someone who is passionate and patient...
Who has already achieved a high level of playing...
Is the most powerful piece to unlocking your potential on the guitar.
The experience made me want to dedicate my life
To help others get the same results.
Helping people go from complete beginners
To becoming proficient guitar players.
Avoiding the frustration and plateaus
That so many people encounter while learning guitar.

Mistake #1: Trying to figure it out all on their own
This is probably the biggest mistake I see beginners make.
The reality is... you don't know what you don't know!
That means... you don't know what things you need to practice... in what order... and in what combination.
You're just guessing at what things you might need to learn... so you can play music you want to play.
You're guessing at how to practice to make the progress you want...
You can't see if there's a missing piece that if you learned... would create a landslide of progress.
You're not getting feedback about things you might be playing incorrectly...
Possibly developing bad habits...
That create a barrier in-between you and playing guitar the way you want.
This is how you end up wasting years... practicing... but still not seeing any results.
Mistake #2: Trying to learn without a clear roadmap
Without a clear roadmap that leads you step-by-step towards playing the way you want...
It's easy to end up sidetracked and working on things that don't add up to you playing any better.
Or working on things that are completely irrelevant to the style of music you want to play.
This is where people turn down a side road that leads to a dead end...
Hoping their will power to learn how to play is strong enough to keep them going after they've been stuck for an extended period of time.
It's much easier to make progress and play the way you want...
When you have a direct path that leads from point A to point Z.
Mistake #3: Getting sucked down the YouTube Rabbit Hole
You start out looking for a video telling you how to play one topic...
Which leads to a second... and a third... and a fourth video...
Maybe it's because it still feels like there's a missing piece of information...
Or that the next video will explain one little detail that you didn't fully grasp...
Or you'll find a way to progress even faster in the next video...
The next thing you know... you're looking at the time and realizing that you're out of time for practice.
The time you were supposed to spend practicing... was wasted watching other people talk about and play guitar the way you wish you could.
Where little (or none) of the time you scheduled... was used to play guitar for yourself.
If it happens once... it's not really that big of a deal...
But if you're like most... it becomes a habit that's repeated frequently...
The next thing you know... you're another year down the road...
And still not able to play guitar any better.
Mistake #4: Learning from a friend or family member that "plays" guitar.
I've heard it so many times...
"I'm going to learn how to play guitar from my uncle/friend".
When I see the person a year later at a grocery store...
And we have that quick conversation...
I find out... they still haven't made any progress towards playing guitar the way they want...
Here's the reality.
Their friend or family member is probably a great person... but they're more than likely not a great player.
They probably have zero experience teaching people how to play.
Zero experience seeing the different challenges and obstacles that people face when trying to learn...
They probably won't understand why you just don't "get it" like they did.
They probably have no invested interest in helping you get good at guitar...
And they probably don't have the time an energy outside of their normal day-to-day life to help you stick with it.
Odds are... they'll just give you random things to practice... little "hacks" that don't really add up to play any better in the long run.
Which leads to feeling frustrated... lost... with little results to show for your efforts.
Instead of a structured step-by-step path... that has a proven track record for getting results.
Mistake #5: Thinking that all guitar lessons are the same
I don't like that I have to add this point to the list of mistakes.
Unfortunately... not all teachers are the same.
It's not like a Snickers bar... where it's going to be the same piece of candy... in the same wrapper... no matter what store you drive to.
Over the years... I've personally had around a dozen teachers.
I've had a teacher who was an extremely advanced player who couldn't come down to my level and explain things in a way that made sense.
Another teacher that didn't prepare any materials... where we just ended up talking about random things unrelated to guitar.
One that wouldn't show up for half the lessons each month... leaving me hanging outside the lesson room wondering where my teacher was.
And i've had a teacher that wasn't as good of a player as me... but helped me have breakthroughs on topics I was struggling with.
The point is... you need to make sure you find a teacher that understands what you want to learn how to play.
They need to understand the style of music You like and want to learn.
What you want to achieve on the guitar...
And come up with a plan to help you achieve it.

Spending hours... tediously combing through books, and YouTube Videos...
Hoping that at some point... the trial-and-error approach pays off.
Before you hit the point of feeling hopeless, and wanting to give up.
Where being able to play your guitar... Fades into a distant memory.
Sitting in a corner (or a closet) collecting dust.
